For a rectangular layer, multiply length by width by depth in the same units. Convert that volume to the supplier’s selling unit, add any separately agreed allowance, then confirm the order increment and delivery cost. If your measurements are ready, use the gravel calculator.

1. Measure each area and layer

Record length, width and the specified depth. Split an irregular area into non-overlapping rectangles or other measurable shapes. Keep separate layers separate: a base layer and a surface layer can have different materials, depths and densities.

A quantity estimate does not choose a suitable installation depth. Obtain that specification for your project before ordering. The examples below use assumed depths to demonstrate arithmetic, not construction recommendations.

2. Calculate the volume you need

With length and width in feet and depth in inches: cubic yards = length × width × depth ÷ 324. The divisor converts inches to feet and cubic feet to cubic yards. For metric measurements, multiply square metres by depth in metres to get cubic metres.

For a hypothetical 10 × 20 ft area at 3 inches: 200 × (3 ÷ 12) = 50 ft³, or about 1.85 yd³. A 4-inch layer over the same area needs about 2.47 yd³, one-third more volume. Neither figure includes extra allowance.

3. Convert volume to weight using the actual product

Volume alone does not determine weight. Ask for your supplier’s bulk density or weight per cubic yard for the product and condition being delivered. Use the sourced gravel density reference to understand the assumptions; a reference is not a measurement of your delivery.

With density in lb/ft³: US short tons = cubic feet × density ÷ 2,000. At an assumed 105 lb/ft³, the 50 ft³ example weighs 5,250 lb, or 2.625 US short tons. At 100 lb/ft³ it weighs 2.5 US short tons. These are illustrative inputs, not a universal gravel density.

Confirm whether the quote uses US short tons or metric tonnes. They are different mass units; neither is a unit of volume. NIST’s unit conversion reference lists the definitions.

4. Separate extra allowance from order rounding

Keep the measured requirement, any supplier-agreed allowance and the final purchase quantity visible. An allowance for uneven ground or handling is not automatically a compaction factor. Ask whether the specified depth describes a loose or finished layer and how the supplier expects you to account for the difference.

If you choose a hypothetical 10% allowance, 2.625 tons becomes 2.8875 tons. If a supplier sells only whole tons, that becomes a 3-ton order. Those are two separate decisions; the calculator does not silently assume whole-ton bulk orders.

5. Compare bags with a delivered bulk quote

Use the bag’s stated volume or mass. For the 50 ft³ example, a bag labelled 0.5 ft³ gives 100 bags before allowance. A bag labelled 50 lb gives 105 bags at the assumed 105 lb/ft³ density. A 50 lb bag and a 0.5 ft³ bag are not automatically equivalent.

Compare the complete cost for the same required quantity: bag count × bag price plus collection or delivery, versus the billable bulk quantity × unit price plus all delivery charges. Include minimum orders, rounding, taxes and extra trips. There is no universal quantity at which bulk becomes cheaper.
