What is the minimum order for gravel delivery?

There is no single minimum that applies to every supplier. The examples below include a landscape yard selling one cubic yard per item for delivery and bulk suppliers listing 20- or 22-ton minimums. These are individual published terms, not a nationwide range or a promise that a supplier serves your address.

Ask three separate questions: What quantity must I order, what amount will I be billed for, and what does delivery cost? The answers may be different. A quantity minimum does not tell you the delivery fee or whether the entire order fits one truck.

Five rules that are easy to confuse

• Minimum delivered quantity: the smallest quantity the supplier will deliver under that offer.
• Minimum charge: a billing floor. Ask whether less material can be delivered while paying the floor.
• Purchase increment: the steps in which material is sold. A hypothetical 0.5 yd³ increment turns a 1.1 yd³ requirement into a 1.5 yd³ order.
• Delivery fee or small-load charge: transport pricing, which may apply even after the quantity minimum is met.
• Truck capacity: the quantity the assigned vehicle can carry for that product. An order minimum does not establish the vehicle’s capacity.

Check whether a minimum applies per product, per trip or to the whole order. Do not assume two materials can share a truck: Menoni & Mocogni explicitly excludes mixed and split loads on its delivery page.

What if you need less than the minimum?

Consider a hypothetical requirement of 0.4 yd³. That is 10.8 ft³. At a 1 yd³ quantity minimum you would buy 27 ft³, leaving 16.2 ft³ beyond the stated requirement. At 0.5 ft³ per bag you would buy 22 bags, totalling 11 ft³. Neither calculation includes an extra allowance.

The bag option is closer to the required volume, but quantity alone does not decide cost. Compare the full prices of these alternatives:

2. The minimum bulk delivery, with a plan for the surplus.
3. Bagged material collected or delivered in the available package quantity.
4. Supplier pickup, if permitted and suitable transport is available.

Use the bags versus bulk comparison to account for rounding and transport. Ask the supplier to confirm loading and delivery conditions. Vehicle labels such as “half-ton pickup” do not establish the remaining payload available for your order.

A quote request you can adapt

What is the minimum delivered quantity, minimum bill and selling increment for this product? Please quote the billable quantity, material price, delivery charge, number of trips, taxes and other fees separately.

Please also confirm the weight unit or product density if quoting by weight, unloading requirements, whether materials can share a load, and how long the quote is valid.

Before accepting, agree on the unloading location and give the supplier the access information it requests. Product selection, minimum quantity and access must all be workable; a price alone is not a complete delivery arrangement.
